Aptos Price Slips as Major Token Unlock Meets Market Volatility

Aptos slipped roughly 3–4% in the last 24 hours, and if you're wondering why APT bled harder than the rest of a soft tape, the answer is staring at you from the vesting schedule. According to CoinMarketCap's write-up, the drop lines up with one of the final large tranches of core contributor and investor unlocks landing on August 10 — supply injection meeting a risk-off market that has zero appetite to absorb it.

The unlock overhang isn't new. Aptos still mints around 6 million APT a month through staking rewards, and the team/foundation/investor unlock schedule stretches roughly a decade out from mainnet launch. So when "one of the last major unlocks" hits the books, every market maker in the order book already knows what comes next. Some portion gets sold. That's not speculation — that's the playbook, every cycle, every VC-allocated cliff.

The broader market didn't help. Total crypto cap shed about 1% over the same window, BTC keeps failing to hold the $65,000 area and trades closer to $64,000, ETH is off 2–2.5%, and XRP, ADA, and ZEC posted even steeper losses. APT being down 3–4% against that backdrop means it's underperforming the altcoin index by a wide margin. Layer 1s are high-beta, and an unlock is the kind of project-specific negative that gets priced aggressively when macro gives traders permission to de-risk.

Speaking of macro — higher UST yields, firmer oil, Strait of Hormuz headlines, and an upcoming US CPI print are exactly the cocktail that makes spot and derivatives traders comfortable leaning short into a known supply event.

What the numbers actually say

  • Unlock size: "Millions of APT" released on Aug 10, explicitly flagged as one of the last two major contributor/investor tranches.
  • Performance gap: APT -3 to -4%, altcoin index ex BTC/ETH roughly -0.4%. That's not a beta move; that's a supply event move.
  • Emission baseline: ~6M APT minted monthly from staking, on top of cliff unlocks. Net circulating supply keeps climbing while buy-side conviction stays weak.
  • Macro tape: BTC repeatedly rejected from $65K, ETH down 2–2.5%, risk-off narrative driven by rates, oil, geopolitics, and a CPI print traders are scared of.

Follow the money

If you're still holding APT through the tail of this vesting curve, run your own math on the remaining unlock schedule against current liquidity depth on the pairs you actually trade. A decade-long emission schedule means the supply drip doesn't stop when this tranche clears — and unlike a Bitcoin halving cycle, there's no narrative shock to reignite demand when the float thickens. Short-term traders are posting bearish technical setups with APT stuck below key EMAs and supports at risk of breaking. Watch for the CPI print, watch the $64K BTC level, and watch whether the unlocked tokens actually clear the books or get parked as over-the-counter sell walls. The market already knows what insiders do at cliffs. Yours truly will be watching the order books, not the X threads.
